Co-created by David Byrne (of Talking Heads fame) and technology investor Mala Gaonkar, The Institute Presents: Neurosociety is an experimental exhibition that directly involves its audience in cognitive demonstrations. Described as an “immersive theatrical experience”, the event sees Byrne and Gaonkar collaborate with many of the world’s leading brain and cognitive laboratories, creating fifteen interactive exhibits based off the lab’s experiments and research. The labs include the California Institute of Technology, Cornell University, Harvard University, Karolinska Institutet, New York University, Princeton University, University College London and Yale University.
Visitors to Neurosociety will be guided in groups of ten through four separate exhibition spaces over 80 minutes, directly participating in the demonstrations. Participants will have the opportunity to be “embodied in a doll, see their hands grow to a vast size, accurately predict election results of fictional politicians, witness moving objects freeze and discover how fair and trusting they are with others.” In addition, visitors reactions and decisions will be documented and may be utilised by laboratories to further their research, therefore the audience becomes part of our ongoing understanding of the brain’s cognitive functions.
The exhibition will also be accompanied by a series of programming by Stanford University that will run for the duration of the show.
