For the aptly titled and absolutely lovely "Grown Backwards," Byrne started
the songs from melodies he hummed into a tape recorder, then subsequently
built the tracks around his aural sketches. The result is more graceful and
beautiful than one might expect from Byrne. "Glass, Concrete & Stone" and
"Empire" are simpler and statelier than anything Byrne has recorded before,
part showtunes, part surreal fairy tale soundtracks. For good measure and to
good effect, Byrne also recorded two opera arias. But lest anyone think
Byrne's suddenly gone too fancy-pants, he covers "The Man Who Loved Beer"
from the like-minded indie chamber pop outfit Lambchop.
