David Byrne, following a week of performances in Mexico, begins the US leg of his American Utopia world tour out West with a performance at the San Diego Civic Center tonight, followed by sets at Coachella and shows in Arizona and Las Vegas in the week ahead. The tour includes songs from the new album as well as classics from his solo career and his days with Talking Heads. A twelve-piece band joins Byrne on stage for an Annie-B Parson–choreographed concert that he has called "the most ambitious show I’ve done since the shows that were filmed for Stop Making Sense." Opening acts include Perfume Genius, Benjamin Clementine, Ibeyi, and Tune-Yards.
The tour heads across the US South, with stops at New Orleans Jazz Fest and Shaky Knees in Atlanta, and up into the Midwest and Canada, returning to the States via the Pacific Northwest and back through the Midwest, with three nights in Chicago, before crossing to the UK and Europe in mid-June. The North American tour resumes in July and continues into the fall, with shows already scheduled through September and beyond.

American Utopia was released last month via Todomundo / Nonesuch Records to widespread critical acclaim. The New York Times noted, “[Byrne’s] a profile in American reinvention—it's here a kind of alien found a band, an audience and a home.” NPR wrote, “If a brain in a jar could observe the world, make sense of it and churn it into a batch of songs, it would make the album American Utopia.”
