Ballroom Marfa 2016 New York Gala Honors David Byrne and Jill Soloway

Via Ballroom Marfa

For this year’s gala, Ballroom will honor David Byrne and Jill Soloway with our inaugural Off the Grid Award. This award recognizes inspirational figures who approach their creative practice with independent spirit, and in doing so develop new ways of experiencing and enriching the world.

Ballroom honors David Byrne for his extraordinary work with The Talking Heads, and for his visionary contributions to opera, film, performance, and visual art. We honor Jill Soloway for her exceptional work in film, television, and transgender activism. Soloway’s forthcoming television adaptation of Chris Kraus’s I Love Dick is set in our very own Marfa. Sandra Bernhard will introduce Soloway, while Jo Harvey Allen will present Byrne.

The evening will include live music by Las Altenas, San Antonio’s all female mariachi band; and legendary artist and songwriter Terry Allen. The gala will also feature a video and performance by David Byrne, aura readings by Radiant Human, and singular art experiences exclusive to Ballroom Marfa. Live and silent auctions, coordinated by Paddle8, will include work from John Baldessari, Larry Bell, Tara Donovan, Sam Falls, Loie Hollowell, Rashid Johnson, Paul McCarthy, Ed Ruscha, Yutaka Sone, Leo Villareal, and Mary Weatherford, with more to be announced. Online bidding begins on Friday, November 4, 2016, and closes at 10pm on November 14. Bidding on select works will conclude as part of the live auction at the November 14 gala. For details on specific lots, please visit Paddle8.

All proceeds from Ballroom Marfa’s 2016 New York Gala support our programs as we continue to produce ambitious exhibitions; commission extraordinary works that are site-specific and site-inspired; enable profound cultural happenings and connections; and share the landscape of the Big Bend with a diversity of artists and musicians.
