I met Asha Bhosle once! It was at an event in NY and I was starstruck. But first, a disclaimer: these are personal selections and, not a representative sample of the film soundtrack riches of the subcontinent. If it were, there'd be a lot more Asha and Lata. Asha and Lata are two of the most well known playback singers—the musicians whose songs are pre-recorded for movies—in India, and are sisters no less! One of the signatures of Indian cinema are the complex, epic, and heavily choreographed songs and dances, which are made possible by the skill of playback singers.

Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu in the south of India—where I am seeing a bit of a music festival as I write this—and Mumbai, further north, are the two principal movie production centers in India. The Mumbai films are in Hindi—commonly known as Bollywood, and the Chennai productions are in Tamil—sometimes known as Kollywood. Indian cinema is a vast and diverse industry (Bollywood and Kollywood represent the two largest sectors) selling billions more tickets annually across the globe than Hollywood! For my money, the Tamil soundtracks are more radical and surprising, but much of Indian film music seems to have some shared aesthetics.

Beyond the romanticism and the exhortations to dance, there is the use of musical collage and aggregation as a form. Songs will veer suddenly from one style to another and juxtapositions between traditional instruments, western orchestras and wild electronic beats and effects are common. This might have evolved out of the songs' origin in films where the lyrics have to accompany changing dramatic action, and the music would be obliged to follow. This weaving of forms is a signature of A.R. Rahman—one of the most famous Tamil composers and producers in the world—who has gone on to collaborate with artists like MIA, Dido and Kendrick Lamar. It is also being seen in the works of young, rising composers and singers, like Nakash Aziz, who has assisted A.R. Rahman on numerous films.

I hear all sorts of unlikely musical connections here—besides the crazy electronic effects common to much contemporary pop, I hear echoes of Malian music, Celtic melodies and Greek music. I'm not claiming there are any cross cultural influences, but maybe some shared DNA?
