Here is my current playlist of interesting, short instrumental pieces. Some are novelty tunes (many of which were hits!) and some are simply wonderful and strange—always accessible, inviting and engaging.
When I was growing up, the duo Ferrante & Teicher were synonymous with boring MOR dual piano novelties and light classical performances on network TV, like the tunes featured on this record:

Little did I know that before this they were quite a bit more radical—imagine if John Cage decided to write and record some novelty tunes and maybe a space-themed album, like this one:

Besides those guys (the beatniks who cashed in) there are some lovely musical saw instrumentals by Emmanuel Brun, and, of course, a bunch more contemporary instrumental tunes, as well.
