Anyone who follows the news knows that parts of Turkey were hit by a series of earthquakes that took the lives of over 47,000 people a few weeks ago. Here is a link to a reputable organization who is providing relief to the survivors.
I have posted Turkish playlists before- mainly Turkish psychedelic stuff from back in the day. This playlist is more current, though it does include some old favorites (like Sezen Aksu). The energy and creativity in these recordings is, to say the least, very inspiring.
Take for example, Gaye Su Akyol, pictured above. She’s a singer, a painter, an activist and has a degree in anthropology. Here, from her website, is her poetic description of her latest album
A ‘contra-reality’ fiction, answering the question rising from destroyed cities, from the cultures that were intended for annihilation along with those cities, from intertwined meanings, from undisputed, unripened ideas, ‘What would it be like otherwise?’ An avant-grade B-movie, wandering through the sounds and cultures of Anatolia on the verge of being forgotten. A passionate-to-the-bone state of self-creation, with the might needed for freedom of expression, in such a political climate where it is considered revolutionary enough to even fall in love, to commit to one’s passion, to own one’s sexual identity, for women and LGBTI+ persons. A sonic expansion and invention, an embroidery of unexpected sounds, words and meanings merging into one another, to dance a newborn motif.
