This month, on the weekend of the 21st in Cartagena, a festival of Caribbean music returns to that city after 30 years! The old colonial part of that city is beautiful- as it should be - as it was the shipping hub for much of the gold and other riches that the Spanish extracted from the new world. But this is about the music...
I was invited to attend (not perform) at the festival decades ago. The artists came from all around the Caribbean basin- Mexico, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Aruba, Trinidad, Venezuela and of course Colombia. This festival brings together a vast variety of styles from; Calypso, plena, reguetón, jíbaro, reggae, salsa, champeta, bachata, soukous, dancehall, merengue, cumbia... and after 30 years, it’s back!
Here’s a playlist of Colombian music- Latin pop, alternative, folkloric, Afro Atlantic and more.
